Good news! You do in fact learn from your mistakes, study finds

Good news You do in fact learn from your mistakes, study findsGood news You do in fact learn from your mistakes, study findsTurns out, the old adage is true - you do learn from your mistakes, but it helps if you were close to getting the right answer all along, according to a new study published in Memory. Our research found evidence that mistakes that are a near miss can help a rolle learn the information better than if no errors were made at all, Dr. Nicole Anderson, the senior author on the study, said. These types of errors can serve as stepping stones to remembering the right answer. But if the error made is a wild guess and out in left field, then a person does not learn the correct information as easily.Guesses that are nowhere near the right answer are not going to help you make a better answer next time, in other words. We remember best when our mistake is almost rightTo test the power of a helpful mistake, the researchers recruited English speakers who had no background in S panish to learn thecorrect translations for Spanish words. When the Spanish words were closer in meaning to the English word, such as carrera which means degree in Spanish and sounds like career in English, they were better able to remember the correct translation. They had a harder time remembering from wrong answers that had widely different meanings. Why does this close trial-and-error form of learning work? Its strengthening the activation of related information in our memory. When we make a mistake that is almost right, we are giving our brains a better mglichkeit at retrieving the right information next time, the researchers suggest. Greater learning is required when outcomes differ widely from expectation, leading to greater attentional deployment to feedback, the study said.Inevitably, employees make mistakes. If youre a boss wants a lesson to stick, you may be better off giving your employees choices that guide them towards the vicinity of the right answer, instead of leavin g it open-ended.In a series of it may be better to ask questions that guide learners to guess in the right ballpark (e.g., Question What kind of living thing is an earwig? Answers reptile, bird, insect) as opposed to left field (e.g., Question What is an earwig? Answers earring, hairpiece, insect), the study concluded.

The Droids Were Looking for, in the Cancer Fight

The Droids Were Looking for, in the Cancer Fight The Droids Were Looking for, in the Cancer Fight The Droids Were Looking for, in the Cancer FightRobot soldiers are likely to fight ur wars in the not-too-distant future, if you believe certain individuals from the Atlantic Councils Cyber Statecraft Initiative (or certain Star Wars episodes). But now researchers at the University of Houston are creating robots for the war within.Within the body, that is. Theyve proven that tiny capsules can be guided, with an MRI, through the blood stream, aligned at a target location, and then fired to attack a cyst or a tumor. The idea first came to Aaron Becker, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the university, while he and some colleagues were experimenting with moving robot arms in an MRI. The massive magnetic field created by MRIs welches meant for imaging, but Becker and his colleagues were trying to use those same fields for the purposes of locomotion. The more we worked with the MRI, the more we realized how limited our forces were, says Becker. It became apparent that biggest thing I needed to solve was how to get more force. So he spent some time online looking at magnetic toys. He came across something called a magnetic accelerator, or a Gauss gun. In short, two groups of steel balls are kept in line and separated over magnets. When an additional trigger ball hits one group, it sends one of its balls over to the other group, which fires its final ball with much greater force than that provided by the trigger.Prof. Aaron Becker in his lab. Image University of HoustonBecker found a piece of aluminum and some steel ball bearings in the lab and 3D printed the other pieces he had in mind. The next time we were in the MRI, at the end, probably at 2 am, I said, Lets try this other thing, he says. We injected it in there. I was pushing the trigger mechanism, and it got closer and closer and then suddenly it snapped and something flew out the other side of the MRI, and I was like, Ah weve found it, weve done it. Then we had to hunt to find that ball bearing, because its against the rules to leave it behind. In essence, Becker had shown that, by using the Gauss gun, the weak force provided by the MRI could be used to create a large enough force to puncture tissue. The gradient field we have now is about 40 percent of gravity. Thats limited, but its enough that you can push things around, especially if in a fluid filled environment, says Becker.Of course, firing a toy in an MRI and firing a tinier version inside a body at a malignant growth are two different things. The capsulized elements of the gun need to be neutrally buoyant. And when they link together the action parts of the gun needs to be free of fluid.Becker created three separate robots the trigger, the barrel, and the delivery component. We call them robots, he says. But really the robot is the MRI plus the capsule, and you.The barrel and the delivery end align first and fire only when the trigger is brought into place. It self-aligns and then sets off a chain reaction to deliver a shot to the target. The potential applications are many. The robots could deliver a radioactive seed inside a tumor, they could inject coils in an area that could be heated for cauterization, they could puncture cysts, and they could leave behind medication. They could also be used for taking internal biopsies with minimal invasiveness. But before any of that happens in a real body, theres plenty of work to be done.Right now were focusing on miniaturizing it, making it lightweight and small, packaging it up so we dont release any air on assembly and so liquid doesnt get in, says Becker. We want to make sure this transfer of energy happens in a fluid free environment, right up against our target.Michael Abrams is an independent writer.I was pushing the trigger mechanism, and it got closer and closer and then suddenly it snapped and something flew out the other side the MRI, and I was like, Ah, weve found it, weve done it.Prof. Aaron Becker, University of Houston

6 Steps to a Glamorous Resume Makeover

6 Steps to a Glamorous Resume Makeover 6 Steps to a Glamorous Resume Makeover Does this sound like you? Youre casually browsing different opportunities because your current position isnt a great fit. Or, youre occasionally browsing job boards, but youre not actively sending out application packages. Even if youre not in full job-hunting mode, it sounds like youre almostthere and could use some resume help. Here are six steps for a complete resume makeover for when youre ready to enter the job hunt in full force.1. Remember that font and size matterA quick way to do a resume makeover is by fixing your resume fonts and sizes. One of our top resume tips your resume should be easy to read. Your best bet is limiting your resume to two fonts, specificallybasic fonts like Times New Roman to make it easier for applicant tracking systems (ATS) to read. Applicant tracking systems (ATS) are software used by recruiters and hiring managers to find the candidates whose resumes best fit the job.Fur ther, get rid of colorsand make sure that youre not bolding or italicizing too many elements of your resume this ultimately de-emphasizes everything in the document.2. Give it a trimEven if youre a seasoned professional, most recruiters will not turn to the second page of your resume let alone your third and fourth. So, shorten your resume to one page. The easiest way to do this is by limiting descriptions to 3 to 4 bullet pointsper job.Another reason one-page resumes become two isextra spacing. See if you have a format that takes up too much space by your titles or resume section headers. If you do, consider removing that space or choosing a different format.3. Consider a formatting changewhich brings us to our next point resume format. If your format is too bulky or too old-fashioned, consider choosing a different format to begin your resume makeover. Theres no better way to breathe new life into your document than by changing up the format to make it easier to read. Here are so me resume templates to get you started.Which of the three main resume formats fits your work history best?4. Add measurable resultsInstead of listing the requirements of your previous positions, any resume makeover should include an addition of measurable results. Measurable results are just that metrics like numbers and percentages that describe exactly how you succeeded in these positions. If youre looking for advice on how to incorporate more measurable results into your resume, Jobscan checks to make sure youve included the recommended minimum of five measurable results on your resume.5. Add keywords and hard skills to your resumeThe way ATS scans applicants? By matching desired characteristics to a candidates resume skills. Optimize your resume by adding keywords that match those in the job posting. Using a job posting and your current resume, Jobscan will suggest hard skills you can add to your resume. Once youre ready to apply for jobs, the resume keywords youve included will already be more relevant toa given position.Hard skills will win the hiring manager over much faster than soft skills.6. Ditch the objective ansichtAn objective statement says more about what you want, rather than what you can offer to the employer. If an employer only has six seconds to read about you, make those seconds count by including a summary statement instead. A summary statement demonstrates what you can do for the employer. In it, you talk about your most persuasive strengths, your skills, and your work history.Spending a few minutes a day rebuilding your resume can make you feel more prepared and confident when you begin job hunting. With the stress of resume writing off your plate, youll have more time to search for your ideal position.

How to Cope With a Toxic Workplace Culture

How to Cope With a Toxic Workplace CultureHow to Cope With a Toxic Workplace CultureWorking in a toxic environment feels stressful, confusing and insurmountable. Toxicity takes root when ineffective leaders perpetuate dysfunction and elevate levels of anxiety, tension and fear. For toxicity to flourish, there has to be a failure in leadership. Achieving success in a toxic environment is elend intuitive because the fixed points on the cultural compass are site-specific rather than universal. To thrive in the environment, one often has to do things that wouldnt yield success in a normal, healthy culture such as cater to the whims of an emotionally chaotic leader, lie, throw a colleague under the bus, etc. A pervasive sense of distrust coupled with inconsistent performance measures and a perpetual stream of turnover also characterize toxicity. Fear, disrespect or belittling are used as motivational tools. There is often a general feeling of chaos and despair as well as a sense that some employees are insiders while others are outsiders. How to cope If you find yourself in a toxic culture, step one is to try and garner emotional clarity. Examine the situation and recognize it for what it is a climate where no one can be healthy or successful. This is not your fault. If you are in a management role, and you have the clout to clean house, you may be able to disinfect the culture. But if you are not management-level, and the toxicity interferes with your role, it may be in your best interest to cut your losses and look for a new job.Do a mental shift In a toxic culture, no one really gets to nail it with their professional efforts because the leadership is eroded. In this environment you have to simply figure out how to survive, keeping yourself intact as much as possible until you can escape. This is a test of your emotional endurance, and you get the opportunity to learn and demonstrate who you are under these chaotic circumstances. Keep in mind that your colleagues are also feeling the toxicity and they will notice and remember the character you demonstrate. Exhibiting poise in a toxic situation is particularly impressive both to those perpetuating the toxicity and to others, like you, who are simply the victims of it. Dont let the toxicity infect you by making you view yourself negatively. Different jobs teach you different things about your professional self and yourself as a person. Working in a toxic culture teaches you how to hold tightly to your sense of who you are despite working in a climate that may try to make you feel badly about yourself. Dont fall for it. Keep your coolDo your best to stay in control of your emotions. Toxicity feeds on negativity, so dont play that game. When your colleagues see you projecting a more positive attitude, they will be drawn to that. Your positivity will be a breath of fresh air, and it will win you support. That will help you more than any expression of negative emotion would, so try to make positiv ity your aim. Walk awayCome up with a good exit plan and prepare walk into your next gig as a cool survivor- like the one who gets away at the end of a horror movie. You may not leave with the experience you had hoped for, but you will move on with knowing that you have an unshakable sense of self and an uncompromising commitment to standing your ground. That has a value all its own.

Virtual Touch Screen Floats in MidAir

Virtual Touch Screen Floats in MidAir Virtual Touch Screen Floats in MidAir A Taiwanese technology company has developed the ultimate in hands-free technology a virtual, binnensee-through touch screen or keyboard display that, when touched in mid-air by the anwenders finger, transmits that signal directly to the computer or mobile device. Physical contact with a touchpad or keyboard is leid required for typing or transmitting commands. The users hands are totally free of any computing or transmitting device. The Industrial Technology Research Institute calls its new product iAT- short for i-air touch technology. By using a pair of special glasses, users can type on a virtual floating keypad, keyboard, mouse, or touch panel just as they would do with physical keys, maximizing flexibility, comfort, and convenience. Because the user is the only one who can see the keyboard in virtual space, privacy is guaranteed. How It WorksThe key elements for this technology are special eyeglasses, an internal DDDR (defined distance with defined range) camera, and an air-touch interface. When linked together, these components allow users to interact with a virtual input device that can be changed at any time from a simple keypad to a keyboard or a touch screen. The eyeglasses are required to actuate the keys on the virtual input device. They are equipped with miniature displays that can be seen with two eyes or just one eye. The glasses allow the user to see the surrounding environment while also displaying data, images, and input devices. The DDDR camera is the most important part of the air-touch technology and is designed to consume as little power as possible, which is a major challenge for wearable computing devices. The special phase-coded and color-coded lens will only discern an object at a predetermined distance between 28 cm and 32 cm. This way it is only possible to transmit a signal from the camera by detecting the presence of a fingertip within the input range. This also conserves power, with the signal shutting off if no fingertip is present. The viewer wearing the glasses can see a 10-inch virtual screen in front of the eyes. Image ITRIWhen the DDDR camera captures an image of the users fingertip, it splits the image into green and red color codes to provide segmentation in image processing, while phase coding provides distance and depth perception of the fingertip. The camera lens focuses the green light component at 28 cm and the red at 32 cm. The combined green and red components resolve to the strongest image signal at 30 cm, the distance of the virtual input device from the user. The camera then captures the image signal at 30 cm as input. Because the camera cannot see image signals outside of the 28 to 32 cm virtual target plane, any signals that fall short or long of this plane will not be processed, which conserves image processing power. Finally, the air-touch interface functionally links the DDDR camera and the special eyeglasses tog ether. The interface interprets what the DDDR camera detects as user input and relays it to the wearable display, which then displays a corresponding graphical response to the user. This linkage gives the user a sense of action-and-result, as normally experienced with physical input devices.Future PossibilitiesThere are, of course, many possible applications for this type of technology. It is ideal for wearable computers because of its accuracy, versatility, privacy, and overall convenience.i-Air Touch creates new possibilities for wearable and mobile computing by freeing users from the distraction of locating and touching keys on a physical input device, resulting in hands-free computing and improving security over voice commands, says Golden Tiao, deputy general director for the Industrial Technology Research Institutes Electronics and Optoelectronics Research Laboratories. In addition to consumer applications, this new technology is suitable for medical applications such as endos copic surgery, augmented reality technologies for gaming, and any industrial applications that benefit from hands-free input.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussioni-Air-touch technology creates new possibilities for wearable and mobile computing by freeing users from the distraction of locating and touching keys on a physical input device.Golden Tiao, Industrial Technology Research Institute

Nurse Interview Questions About Patient Complaints

Nurse Interview Questions About Patient Complaints Nurse Interview Questions About Patient Complaints Nursing is definitely not an easy job. There’s a lot of juggling communication with doctors, patients, and their families, during very trying times. It may seem like someone is always complaining about something and the patients stress can become your own when youre handling a barrage of complaints. If you have an interview for a nursing job, the interviewer will probably ask questions about how you handle patient complaints. Essentially, the interviewer is trying to determine how well you handle stress and how you’ll treat patients and family members when they’re upset and have made a complaint. A nurse who does a bad job of handling a complaint may escalate the situation into something much worse, so it’s important to know how you’d assess and handle any such complaints. Nursing Skills to Highlight During an Interview There are two skills to  highlight during an interview that can illustrate how you handle the daily stresses of a demanding job, and  potential interview questions  to prepare for, flexibility and empathy: Flexibility:  Every day can be different on the job; you never know what to expect, and at the same time you have to keep everybody happy. As a nurse, you have to handle varying shifts,  heavy workloads, paperwork, and dealing with physicians and families. Having a non-compliant patient who complains requires you to be flexible, think on your feet, and come up with solutions to his or her problems while keeping everyone happy. Empathy:    Giving patients care and showing concern and empathy are inherent parts of taking care of people who are sick, in pain, or in crisis. Patients (and their families) need your attention but can be challenging when they complain, and may push your buttons, or test your limits. Nurses may also deal with compassion fatigue â€" essentially, an empathy burnout from helping people around the clock. Keep in mind, though, that sometimes patients complaints are nothing more than a coping skill in a situation over which the patient has little control. Interview Questions About Dealing With Patients Complaints If you’re nervous about your upcoming interview and aren’t sure exactly what to expect, you may benefit from a review of the following potential interview questions about patient complaints: How would you handle a patient who complains indiscriminately about everything? How do you handle a patient who voices dislike for the food and refuses to eat?How do you handle a patient who subsequently has his family bring in outside food that is contraindicated because of his diet? How would you deal with a patient who complains of pain? How do you handle a patient who cannot have any additional pain medication? How do you manage a patients irritation when whiteboards arent updated notifying him of whom his nurse on duty is? How do you placate a patient whos disgruntled with her roommate? How do you manage someone who complains about getting out of bed?How do you encourage a patient who complains about taking care of his basic self-care?How do you handle a patient who complains about her doctor? How do you handle a patient who complains that his phone or television doesnt work?Nurses or technicians have to do tests or draw blood in the middle of the night. How do you deal with patients who complain about interrupted or lack of sleep? How do you handle a patient complaint about a noisy nursing station that irritates him or disrupts his sleep? How do you deal with a patient who complains about your care, specifically?Whats your strategy for a patient complaining about inadequate response to her complaints?Whats your approach for a patient complaining about rude or inattentive staff? How do you placate a patient complaining about long waits for tests? Practice Makes Interview Perfect Now that you have an idea of what questions to expect, take some time to prepare for your interview by practicing your answers. Say them out loud a few times â€" that way you’ll feel more comfortable when it’s time for your answers. Even better, if you have a friend, colleague, or family member willing to pose as the interviewer. He or she can read each of these questions to you and you can practice your answers. Of course, you’ll be asked questions about a variety of things, so take some time to review this guide to nursing interview questions, answers, and tips.

Quantify Your AccomplishmentsFinancial employers want to see how you will add value to their company. Do this by showing, numerically, how you improved previous companies. Phrases like “reduced closing process by 3-5 days” or “saved company 10% in overhead costs” clearly demonstrate your accomplishments in the finance industry. Write a Resume Profile A resume profile or resume summary statement is a great way to concisely demonstrate why you are qualified for the job. In a few sentences, you can explain how you have added value to other companies. List Your CertificationsMany finance jobs require particular finance certifications. List these certifications in a separate section of your resume to demonstrate your expertise. List Your Skills There are a number of skills that are critical to a financial job. For example, one area that is particularly important in the financial industry is software experience. Consider making a specific list of software skills on your resume. Describe Each CompanyConsider providing details on each company you worked for. Note whether each company is public or private, its size, and net worth. It will help the company decide whether you have experience with similar organizations. How to Use Examples and Templates Designing a document such as a resume from scratch can be time-consuming and difficult. A template helps you with the layout of your document. Templates also show you what elements you need to include in your document. Along with helping with your layout, resume examples can help you see what kind of content you should include in your document. They can also give you ideas on the type of language you want to use. For example, a sample resume might show you the kind of action words you should include in your resume. You should use a template or example as a starting point for your documents. However, you should always be flexible. You can change any of the elements of the example to fit your own needs. For example, if an example resume lacks a skills section, but you want to include one, you should do so. In fact, you should never make your document the same as an example or template. That is because your documents should fit your individual work history and the requirements of the job for which you are applying. 15 Tips for Getting Ready to Job Search

15 Tips for Getting Ready to Job Search 15 Tips for Getting Ready to Job Search Are you ready to apply if you get a call or email from someone who is interested in talking to you about a new position? Its always a good idea to be job search ready even if youre not thinking about looking for a new job right now. You never know when an exciting opportunity will present itself even when you are not actively seeking jobs. A colleague at work might retire and open up a choice position, a professional contact might refer you to an attractive job, or a recruiter might reach out to you and encourage you to throw your hat into the ring. This is an active job market, and hiring managers are always on the look out for good prospects.   Perhaps you are part of the growing trend where workers are almost continually looking for their next job. Add to those scenarios unforeseen circumstances that can impact your job status like layoffs due to a downturn in business at your employer.   In any case, it makes sense to be positioned to apply quickly and effectively for emerging opportunities. The best advice is to be ready to shift into job search mode without delay. Heres how to get (and stay) job search ready. 15 Tips for Getting (and Staying) Job Search Ready 1. Maintain a weekly journal of your accomplishments on the job or in other active roles so you can keep track of the specifics. Having a record of your top achievements will make it easier to write cover letters and prepare for interviews. 2. Update your resume each month to incorporate your latest achievements and professional activities. If your resume is always current, its easy to share it with a connection or a recruiter. Heres how to give your resume a five-minute makeover. 3. Keep your LinkedIn profile up to date by integrating the latest information about your skills, knowledge, and accomplishments.  Employers are mining passive job seekers more than ever through LinkedIn searches. Review these nine simple tips for making a better LinkedIn profile. 4.  Continually expand your roster of contacts. When you meet someone who might be able to help with a future job search, connect with them on LinkedIn and any other career and social networking platforms you use. The more connections you have, the more opportunities youll have to get hired.   5. Look for opportunities to engage your key contacts periodically to keep relationships current. Share information of interest with individuals and offer to assist contacts when they are in career transition.  Dont forget that meeting in-person is a valuable tool for cementing those relationship youve made online. 6.  Create and carry out a professional development plan. Keep your skills and knowledge current. Employers prefer workers who are committed to self-improvement and who are in touch with trends.   7.  Stay active with professional organizations to maintain and expand your network.  Writing articles, helping to organize conferences,  attending career networking events, and presenting at association programs are all ways to maintain a high profile.   8. Know who you would tap for recommendations at all times.  Think comprehensively about prospective references including employees, supervisors, suppliers, clients, and other key business partners.  Write LinkedIn recommendations for targeted individuals and many will reciprocate. Know who you will use as a reference, and be sure to get their permission before you use them. 9. Regularly review job listings in your field to assess trends and employer expectations. Check Indeed.com or one of the other top job sites every couple of weeks to see what jobs are available for someone with your skill set.   10. Evaluate your job satisfaction on a regular basis and anticipate burnout before you are overwhelmed with stress. If youre tired and stressed, take the time to consider other job options. Think about whether its time to quit your job. 11. Research career alternatives if you believe your current field is no longer suitable given your current interests or lifestyle. 12. Try to have an emergency fund in case you lose your job unexpectedly. Adequate savings will afford you the opportunity to be more selective as you seek a new job. 13.  Make sure you have copies of work samples and personal documents saved outside your place of employment in case you are  separated from your work computer with little notice. 14. Be ready to summarize your current career interests and most compelling assets succinctly. Think in terms of a 1-minute elevator pitch should you encounter a potential networking contact or recruiter. 15. Develop and update a portfolio of work samples. Store them on LinkedIn or a personal website that can be easily shared with employers and contacts. You dont have to stay in active job seeking mode, but taking some to be sure that everything is in place if an ideal job comes along will save some stress in scrambling to pull together job application materials in a hurry. If you unexpectedly lose your job, youll be positioned to job search immediately.

The Power of Evaporation

The Power of Evaporation The Power of Evaporation The Power of Evaporation Evaporation is an overlooked source of alternative energy that, with the right technology, could become more plentiful and reliable than solar or wind power. Researchers at Columbia University are at the forefront of trying to turn this idea into a reality. In 2015, the team of scientists, led by biophysics professor Ozgur Sahin, developed several prototype devices that successfully generated energy from the natural process of evaporation. The devices rely on bacterial spores that expand and contract as they absorb and release evaporating moisture. The mechanical energy from this motion is then converted into small amounts of renewable electricity, enough to light up LEDs or power a small toy car. The evaporation engine controls humidity with a shutter that opens and closes, prompting bacterial spores to expand and contract. Image: Columbia University In a recent paper in Nature Communications, Sahin estimates that with ideal conditions and scaled-up versions of their technology, evaporation from U.S. lakes and reservoirs could theoretically supply nearly 70 percent of the countrys electricity needs or more than300 gigawatts of power every year. For example, tens of thousands of these interconnected devices could float on top of lakes and reservoirs, using bacterial spores to generate electricity. How the System Works One of these spore devicesthe evaporation engineconsists of plastic strips coated with water-absorbing spores from the soil bacteriumB. subtilis. Changes in humidity prompt the bacterial spores to expand and contract. They do this with a lot of strength, says Sahin. When this happens, the strips elongate and shorten in response. Theyre essentially working like a muscle, and that energy can be converted into electricity. Although humidity itself does not tend to change rapidly in the natural environment, there is enough evaporation coming from open-water surfaces to be harnessed by his devices. The way we do this is we put the strips below shutters, says Sahin. When the shutters open up, they can let moisture go through. When these shutters are closed, they block moisture. When multiple spore-coated strips are put together, he notes, the piston-like system can be tied to a generator to produce power. This proof-of-concept experiment is a critical first step. Larger-scale systems will require fewer moving components to maximize implementation. One goal is to make something sheet-like out of the spore material, so these sheets can expand and contract on a surface area, says Sahin. The final material could produce a significant amount of power. Future Possibilities In addition to creating energy, evaporation technology can save water. Sahin estimates that half of the water naturally lost from lakes and reservoirs through evaporation could be saved during the energy-harvesting process. By his calculations, this is about 25 trillion gallons a year, or about one-fifth of the water Americans consume. This would be especially valuable for water-sensitive cities with growing populations, especially in the southwestern US. Another interesting property we realized is that by slowing down evaporation, we can raise the temperature of water, effectively storing energy as heat that can be later released on demand, points out fellow researcher Ahmet-Hamdi Cavusoglu. Depending on the local weather conditions, we could release this stored energy rapidly as additional evaporation to match fluctuations in electrical energy demand. This would be similar to how hydroelectric dams vary their power output by changing the flow rate of water through the dam. There are, however, environmental concerns. Slowing the amount of direct evaporation from a body of water could change water temperatures, negatively impacting aquatic life. Covering parts of a lakes surface with these engines could further reduce water temperatures by blocking sunlight. Less sunlight reduces algae levels, which in turn reduces oxygen levels, possibly resulting in fish die-offs. The team is researching how to make better spore-based materials and build larger engine prototypes. No one previously has provided an estimate as to how powerful evaporation could be, says Cavusoglu. We hope our work will provide added motivation for future research and development on this evolving class of materials. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussion We hope our work will provide added motivation for future research and development on this evolving class of materials. Prof. Ahmet-Hamdi Cavusoglu, Columbia University

How to Apologize to a Client (With Email Template!) - The Muse

How to Apologize to a Client (With Email Template!) - The Muse How to Apologize to a Client (With Email Template!) There’s no getting around it: Someone on your team screwed up. Maybe Nicole didn’t get a speaking submission in on time, or Rob double-booked interviews (making the client look bad), or Jessie didn’t get the sign-off needed to move a project forward. Whatever happened, and whoever was at fault, you’re going to be late delivering a project or it’s not going to turn out as expected. Now you’ve got to break it to your client- and deal with their (totally justified!) frustration. How can you make things right and still maintain a good relationship with your client? Here’s what you need to know. Don’t Throw Your Team Members Under the Bus It’s tempting in this moment to simply say, “But it wasn’t my fault! Jared was the one who forgot to send the report out!” But pointing fingers or blaming another colleague for messing up isn’t going to save your client relationship. In fact, it can have the opposite effect. The client is going to assume there’s something broken on your team and lose trust. If you can’t manage internal relationships, it doesn’t bode well for your relationship with them. Have you ever been over to a friend’s house and the couple is bickering the whole time? It’s not a comfortable situation, and you likely aren’t going to accept the next dinner invite. Instead, look as this as an opportunity to deepen your client’s trust in you by showing how you and your team work together to be successful, even in the face of adversity. Also, don’t forget your team is watching how you handle this- presenting a united front lets your teammates know you have their backs no matter what, and they’ll have yours in return. Directly Acknowledge the Problem or Mistake At the end of the day the client wants to feel heard and understood. So listen to them and their frustrations and acknowledge and empathize with what they’re feeling. Communicate what happened- you should be transparent with them- but keep it vague. They only need to know how they’ll be affected, not all the details of what exactly went wrong internally. This just opens the door for your strategy or team to be questioned even more. And, actually apologize the right way- which means you should say the words “I’m sorry” and really mean them. Then, they’ll want to know how the issue is going to be fixed, so make sure you have a plan in place before addressing them (more on that below). The goal of direct communication is to quickly and efficiently get to the part where you explain how you’re going to do better and re-instill confidence. Come Up With a Solution You know what instantly makes a mistake better? A solution. Take the time- before you get on the line with the client- to come up with a thoughtful solution that can actually be implemented. Resist the temptation to throw spaghetti at the wall or make promises you can’t keep. In addition to fixing the specific project at hand, maybe you can offer a discount to the client or comp some project hours. Or, maybe you can use this bump in the road to re-strategize or turn the project in an even better direction. Enlist your team, manager, or anyone who can help you make the solution happen to ensure you have all of your ducks in a row when you talk to the client. If a client keeps coming back to their frustration over the mistake, use this solution as a way to pivot back to a more productive discussion. For example: Frustrated Client: “But, I just can’t believe this happened, this is unacceptable!” You: “I completely understand your frustration because I don’t like that this happened either. It’s why I want to come up with a solution that makes you happy and I really believe that doing [solution] will get us to the finished product you need.” Talk in Person (or on the Phone) While it’s certainly easier to just craft an email and send it out to an angry client without having to confront them head-on, this is really something you should do over the phone or in someone’s office. Tone and empathy can get lost or skimmed over in an email. Doing it verbally is also a good way to answer any lingering concerns in real time. No, it won’t be an easy discussion, but you’ll be glad you didn’t hide behind a computer screen and actually showed your client the respect they deserve. If they’re not immediately available, it’s OK to leave them a voicemail prefacing the conversation. Try something like: Hi [Client’s Name], hope you’re doing well. Something has come up with [project] that I’d like to talk through. Please call me back as soon as you can. I will have my phone on me/I’m around from [time] to [time]. Talk to you soon. Or, shoot them a quick email: Hi [Client’s Name], I would love to jump on a quick call to discuss [project]. Something has come up that needs to be addressed immediately that I think is best explained over the phone. I’m available today from [time] to [time]- please call me at your earliest convenience: [your phone number]. Or, let me know the best time to reach you today. Thanks, [Your Name] Can’t Chat? Send a Thoughtful Email If speaking to your client live is just not possible at the moment, or you’re working under tight time constraints, it’s best to send a thorough and honest email to let them know what’s going on. It could look something like the following: Hi [Client’s Name], I left you a voicemail, and would love to connect on the phone on this, but in the interest of time I want to let you know that unfortunately, [our timeline to deliver X project has been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances/we weren’t able to complete X piece of the project in the timeframe we had originally projected/we had a miscommunication internally that led to X]. I completely understand the frustration that comes with a setback like this. This is definitely not how we like to do business, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. I want to assure you that [project] remains a huge priority for our team and come up with a solution to make sure it’s a success. We’d like to [your solution- what you’re doing and plan to do to make things right or get back on track as much as possible with the original timeline.] I’m happy to jump on a call to discuss further (you can reach me at [number] and I’ll be around today from [time] to [time]) and will continue to keep you posted on our progress, but please let me know if you have any initial questions. Again, my sincerest apologies. [Your Name] Again, this doesn’t mean you’re in the clear to not talk in person or on the phone- expect that you’ll have to follow up and handle their reaction verbally. Speaking of which… Follow Up Now you need to deliver on what you promised, and also give your client some extra attention with good old-fashioned communication. Make sure you’re following up with the client over the phone or via email throughout the transition to let them know where you stand and reaffirm that they’re a priority. Offer opportunities for them to ask questions or give input, and thank them for their patience. You’ll want to follow up with your team, too. A dropped ball is a learning opportunity. How do you support your team members so this doesn’t happen again? How can your team work together more cohesively? Take the opportunity to create a dialogue around how to improve how your team works or deals with these situations. In the end, mistakes happen. While they may not be fun to deal with, communicating directly, taking responsibility, and strategizing solutions can help you make amends without throwing anyone under the bus- or losing an important client.

Whether to Award a Year-End Bonus

Whether to Award a Year-End Bonus Whether to Award a Year-End Bonus As the year comes to a close, it can be an ideal time to recognize individual, departmental and company-wide success with year-end bonus pay. Depending on how they are structured, bonuses may reward strong individual contributions or overall company growth. Will your company award bonuses? In a new Robert Half survey, 51 percent of the senior managers responded that they expect to offer “somewhat higher” or “much higher” bonus pay by the end of the year. See the data from the senior manager survey in the infographic, Holiday Bonuses: Boon or Bust. What’s most important for employers to know about awarding year-end bonus pay - or not? 1. Know your objectives Some companies give bonuses as a way of thanking their employees for their contributions and do not tie them to specific metrics. These are usually viewed as more informal holiday bonuses and may be more nominal than performance-based bonuses. However, these holiday bonuses also create goodwill with employees and contribute to creating a positive company culture. Companies may also offer a one-time bonus as an incentive for employees or teams around a specific project or goal. For example, they may be planning a new division, initiative or relocation that will require a significant amount of time or commitment from the staff. These bonuses are also often structured with specific metrics and goals. According to the latest Robert Half Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance, highly skilled professionals expect not just a base salary that’s in line with what other firms are offering but also a choice of benefits and incentives that are just as competitive. Many companies use bonuses as a recruiting and retention tool. If you don’t, you could be on the outside looking in when it comes to top performers. VISIT THE SALARY CENTER 2. Recognize the benefit of bonuses One benefit of bonuses is they give you a more flexible way to compensate your employees than salaries alone. Employers can decide how to structure their bonus programs and what types of bonuses they’ll offer, based on individual, team or company performance - or a combination of those. Another benefit is improving staff retention. Aside from a competitive salary, professional development and work-life balance, workplace recognition is a significant strategy for keeping talented members of your team on board. Also, year-end bonuses are a great way to celebrate success. According to Robert Half research, The Secrets of the Happiest Companies and Employees, accounting and finance professionals report their biggest driver of happiness is feeling appreciated for their work. 3. Communicate with employees either way Group meetings are fine if bonus structures are the same for all employees, but if not, you should speak individually with each staff member. If you plan to distribute a bonus, here are some suggested ways of telling the employee: Have a meeting as early as possible and discuss the reason for the bonus. Schedule this separate from a performance review. Explain how the payment is determined and when to expect it. Take the opportunity to offer your appreciation for the employee’s contributions. If you won’t be giving a year-end bonus, here are some suggestions: Communicate the news as early as possible, and maintain the same sense of transparency as you convey the reason a bonus won’t be given and, if appropriate, explain what the employee can do to improve the odds for a future bonus. Show compassion, care and confidence in the employee’s work, if it’s deserved. If you decide on a different kind of incentive or gift, talk about what that will be. 4. Consider alternatives to bonus pay If you decide against offering year-end monetary bonuses or don’t have the budget for it, consider other kinds of employee perks, such as flexible scheduling, days off, telecommuting options or a casual dress day. Throw a holiday party or a department potluck. Give baskets filled with treats, gift cards or company merchandise. Whatever you decide, the important thing is to keep employees in the loop and let them know your company appreciates their work and commitment - bonus or no bonus. - by Ky Kingsley Ky Kingsley Ky Kingsley is vice president of Robert Half Finance Accounting, North America. How to Find and Borrow Resume Samples

How to Find and Borrow Resume Samples How to Find and Borrow Resume Samples If you need to tailor your resume to fit your field, it can be helpful to look at what others in your line of work have done. When it comes to resume writing, finding the right words to describe who you are and what you’re good at can feel like trying to find your keys after you’ve dropped them in a dark alley.Even if you hire a professional resume writer, you can count on being asked to provide a short bio and a synopsis of your career. There’s just no way around it: You’re going to have to get it all down on paper. Instead of groping in the dark, the first thing to do is to brainstorm using a technique called ” brain dump.”Before you even start to brainstorm, many take the popular route â€" finding resume samples to see how your peers said it first. But where do you find good resume samples, and how do you know which ones are worth applying to your own? Ladders asked resume experts where they look to find sample resumes and how to avoid copying and repeating the mistakes of those who came before you.Ask and ye shall receiveThe first place to start is simply to ask. Debra Benton, president of Benton Management Resources and an executive coach, suggested using social-media sites like LinkedIn, Facebook and even Craigslist to ask for samples. State that you’re writing a resume and would like to see what your peers consider current and up-to-date resumes in your field, she said. Make it clear that you’re not hiring but are just interested in seeing what a current, well-put-together resume looks like, she said. “With any social media, young people, particularly, are so helpful and willing to share,” she said.Seek, and ye shall be inundatedFor Greg Bennett, global practice director with The Mergis Group, a leading executive-recruiting firm, the question isn’t so much where to find resume samples as it is where to find those worth emulating. The Internet abounds with sites offering sample resumes for every field, profession and vertical imaginab le, but he’s “never been in the habit of searching for sample resumes” online because “most resumes done are poorly done.”You don’t want to repeat mistakes like attaching your picture to your resume, a practice that is widely rejected by resume professionals, or including information that’s in violation of EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) guidelines, including age, disability, race, national origin and gender. Those resumes will be disqualified by most employers. But not all samples are bad, and even the mistakes have value. Benton advises her clients to look at sample resumes and analyze not just what’s attractive but also what isn’t. “If you want to stand out, to be a leader, you must do what others don’t,” she said. “So you need to know what others are doing so you don’t do the same thing.”LinkedIn is a source of resume information if not resume samples, Benton said. She recommended you review the LinkedIn profiles of their peers to see how they chose to describe the same work experiences and skills you are about to describe. The first stop should be the profile’s summary statement, which should read like the executive summary of a good resume. Review many profiles and resumes of your peers, and pay special attention to those whose careers have paralleled your own. If these rivals’ summaries sound more impressive than your own, find exactly what makes theirs sound so good and tailor your own summary in accordance.Go to the pros for the best sample resumesThe surest way to find tested, proven resume samples is to go to the pros who create resumes, who read hundreds of resumes and who can instantly tell you when a resume will catch a hiring manager’s eye: hiring managers, recruiters and certified professional resume writers.Benton recommended asking recruiters and hiring managers in your field for examples of resumes they like. They can send you sections with redacted information without violating anyone’s pri vacy. And, of course, certified professional resume writers make it their business to study what works. They often have libraries of winners and losers at their disposal. Most will share those samples with you and use the library, plus years or experience, to write your resume to those standards.

The Myth of One True Calling

The Myth of 'One True Calling' The Myth of 'One True Calling' It has never made much sense to me that we’re born with one true calling and that we must find this one true calling and then do only those things that our one true calling calls us to do to the best of our innate abilities for the rest of our lives. And so, I was pleased to come across Emilie Wapnick’s new book How to Be Everything: A Guide for Those Who (Still) Don’t Know What They Want to Be When They Grow Up, which was published today and which is based on Wapnick’s wildly popular TED Talk “Why some of us don’t have one true calling.” Wapnick herself is many things, including writer, artist, career coach, website founder, and former lawyer. Her book’s main message is that it’s not only okay if you don’t have one true calling but it can also be a great advantage. At the same time, she acknowledges that not having one true calling is very likely to make your life a bit more difficult than if you did have one true calling- or, at least, will present different challenges, including: 1) guilt and shame, 2) the discomfort of being a beginner over and over, 3) the fear of not being the best and brightest, 4) the fear of being an impostor, and 5) having to listen to external critics. Wapnick's How to Be Everything offers concrete ways to deal with these challenges if you’re someone with many interests and without one true calling. It also offers definitions for various subsets of people with many interests and without one true calling. These include multipotentialite: a person with many interests and many creative pursuits; polymath: a person who knows a lot about many different things or a person of encyclopedic learning; puttylike: a person who embodies different identities and performs varied tasks gracefully; and scanner: a person with intense curiosity about numerous unrelated subjects. In any case, I particularly like what Wapnick’s recommendations are for addressing the fear of not being the best. Which is something bound to happen if you find yourself switching careers at some point, and which is something I’ve found to hold people back from pursuing second, third, or even fourth careers. It’s impossible to actually be the best. Even if you dedicate your life to one discipline, you will likely never reach number one. There will always be someone more skilled and someone less skilled than you- that’s just life. Pursuing something with the goal of being better than everyone else pits you against other people and creates an atmosphere where you’re constantly comparing yourself to others and judging yourself. And here’s another little secret: there’s no National Guild of Experts out there, giving out badges to the true masters and exposing the amateurs as fakes. You’re an expert until someone says otherwise- and they usually don’t. Most potential employers and clients are looking for people who understand their particular problem and can provide them with solutions. If you present yourself with confidence and link your skills to concrete results, the right people will want to work with you. Judging by all the excerpts of How to Be Everything I’ve read, Wapnick’s book seems like a must read for all  multipotentialites, polymaths,  and scanners of the world. And while you wait for your copy to arrive via mail (or until you begin to read it digitally tonight), you might as well take in Wapnick’s TED Talk, which won’t cost you anything but 12 minutes of your time.
